In my youth, I loved to visit friends from small villages along my native Mediterranean coast of France, being always attracted to the sea and the fishing boats along the small wharves.
This “window effect” painting depicts a small village wharf with narrow jetties, where several boats are moored. In the foreground and background are a number of fishing nets carefully hung out to dry, some with seagulls sitting on top. The simplicity of the houses with their terracotta or tin rooves is typical of the region. Some are reflected in the window panes.
This is a very early morning scene with the sun beginning to reflect on the sea as the day begins. The feeling is one of hope and optimism for the boats that will head out to sea for the catch that day.
