This still life depicts the essential ingredients used to make ""aiolie" in the traditional French way, namely with egg yolks, garlic and olive oil.
All the utensils shown in the preparation are typically French, including a glass carafe for the oil, a mortar and pestle in olive wood, and a simple wooden cutting board and knife. The finished "aiolie" is seen dripping from the mortar and pestle. The items are placed on a kitchen table draped with a chequered orange tablecloth.
